Ghost City, A Plague in San Francisco
In 1900 the Bubonic Plague invaded San Francisco, arriving on ships from Asia. The death toll was 113 but since nearly all deaths were confined to Chinatown the epidemic was hushed-up for fear of what its news might do to the local economy. Seven years later the Black Death again sprang up in Chinatown, killing another 77. This time the city combated the problem by mounting a public rat hunt and paying a bounty of 10 cents per rat. More than 150,000 rats were captured and examined at a central laboratory. In addition 11,200 buildings were disinfected and another 1,713 demolished. The plague never returned.
