Construction, The New Bay Bridge
Running parallel to the existing East Span of the Bay Bridge stands a line of 14 enormous 240-foot high cranes. These cranes are assembling the new $2.6 billion Bay Bridge which is being built next to the old bridge. Each giant crane cost $1.2 million and is capable of lifting up to 88,000 pounds. Pictured below, some bridge sections are floating in to be lifted by the cranes. Construction was scheduled to be finished in 2006 with the old bridge demolished in 2007 but delays have extended those dates. When completed the New Bay Bridge's Self-Anchored Suspension Span, rising 525 feet above the water, is sure to be the Bay Area's newest icon.
