Fishing Chapel, Fisherman's Wharf
During the first Sunday in October a blessing for the fishing fleet is held in San Francisco. The special mass is followed by a parade from North Beach down to the Wharf, where a priest blesses the sailors for their safety and the fish for continual bounty. A boat procession follows that afternoon. The tiny chapel shown above was built on the Wharf in 1979 stands as a memorial to all those killed fishing. The chapel contains plaques bearing the names of the hundreds lost at sea. Latin mass is held here every Sunday but flags and banners hanging from the chapel's ceiling attest to the many other religions that use the chapel as well.
