City Hall Rotunda, Civic Center
San Francisco's Beaux-Arts City Hall was built in 1915 and is the focal point of the city's Civic Center. The building's rotunda dome rises over three hundred feet, higher even than the dome of the U.S. Capitol. In 1923 President Warren G.Harding lay in state here after dying during a trip to San Francisco, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were married here in 1954, and Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were murdered in this building in 1978. It was also in this City Hall that Mayor Gavin Newsom presided over same-sex marriages in 2004. Pictured above, another couple climbs the famous sweeping staircase to their own wedding.
