Tien Hau Temple, Chinatown
There are a number of Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist temples in San Francisco. However this one dedicated to Tien Hau, the Queen of Heaven and Goddess of the Seven Seas is the longest-operating temple in the United States. Founded in 1852 by Day Ju, one of the first three Chinese to arrive in San Francisco, the temple is now located on the top floor of this building on Waverly Avenue. Tien Hau is the protector of seafarers and visitors, so guests are welcome to visit, light incense, or make an offering but photography is not permitted inside the temple.
