Mirrored Sky, Muir Beach
Muir Beach is a tiny community of about 130 families located ten miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It's one of those unique, hidden Northern California towns that appears to be located hundreds of miles from any major city. Originally settled by Portuguese immigrants, the town was home to shore-guarding soldiers during World War II, Bohemians during the '50s, Beatniks in the '60s, and Hippies in '70s. The Old Tavern, a rundown bar from the 1920s, nurtured a generation of psychedelic bands including Big Brother and the Holding Company and Creedance Clearwater Revival. Local legend has it that Janis Joplin's ashes are scattered on this beach. Today the town still retains a strong sense of community cohesion that somehow peacefully mixes its blue collar and revolutionary residents.
