Saints Peter and Paul, North Beach
Sts. Peter and Paul Church at 666 Filbert Street took 15 years to build and has seen a lot of history. Cecil B. DeMille filmed the construction and used the footage as the building of the Temple of Jerusalem in his film, The Ten Commandments. In 1927, a group of anarchists attempted to blow up the church, the police foiled the attempt and the would-be bombers were given their last rites on the steps of the church. In 1954, Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe posed for wedding pictures here but were not able to marry inside as they were both previously divorced, they married at City Hall instead. Today mass at the church is conducted in English, Italian, and Cantonese.
