Herb Caen Way, The Embarcadero
One of the most beloved citizens in San Francisco history was Herb Caen. Caen came to the city in 1937 and began a newspaper column which he continued until his death in 1997. His daily vignettes provided news, gossip, satire, and anecdotes about the city he loved. Known as "Mr. San Francisco" he coined the terms 'beatnik' and 'hippie', fought against the use of the term 'Frisco', wrote over a dozen books about the city, and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1996. To honor him the city renamed one of the most beautiful promanades in the country, a 3.2 mile waterfront stretch of the Embarcadero, Herb Caen Way.
