On July 1, 1993 John Luigi Ferri entered the offices of his lawyers, Pettit & Martin on the 34th floor of 101 California with two TEC-9s and a .45 semi-automatic pistol. Apparently dissatisfied with the legal services he had received Ferri began to shoot, murdering eight people, wounding six more, and then taking his own life. Later he was found to have on him a list of another 30 people that he blamed for his troubles. This tragedy was one of the events that led to the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban that prohibited the sale of semiautomatic assault weapons. The ban expired on September 13, 2004.
