Opera House, Civic Center
Honestly, who hasn't slept a little at the opera? In 1906 the San Francisco Opera was staging Bizet's Carmen with Enrico Caruso as Don Jose. The famous Italian tenor was staying at the Palace Hotel on the morning of April 18th when the great earthquake struck. Caruso ran out of the hotel, dressed only in a towel, weeping in a panic. Despite many eyewitnesses to this, Caruso later denied all accounts that he had left the hotel crying. He vowed never to return to San Francisco, and he never did.
