Cannon, Fort Point
Armed with 126 cannons and completed in 1861 Fort Point was immediately made obsolete by the new Civil War era cannons which would have smashed its brick structure. Despite this, the fort helped protect the U.S. eighty years later when it served as a monitoring base against any enemy submarines entering San Francisco Bay during WWII. It even survived the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge when engineers designed a special bridge span over the fort and thereby avoided it's demolition.
