SS Jeremiah O'Brien, Pier 45
Off Pier 45 sits the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, one of only two remaining afloat from the 2,710 Liberty Ships built during World War II. This 7,176 ton ship was built in 1943 in only 56 days, with fully one third of the construction team made up of women. This ship undertook dangerous convoy work supplying Great Britain during the war. The Jeremiah O'Brien also took part in the D-Day invasion, coming under attack from enemy bombs, aircraft, and torpedos. The ship is now open for public tours and historic cruises such as the one that took her back for the 50th anniversary of D-Day.
