Picnic Bench, San Francisco Bay
Today on FogBay's 300th post we salute the Bay itself. Together with its delta, it is the West Coast's largest estuary at 1,600 square miles. At its widest, it is 12 miles, east to west and 60 miles, north to south, and up to 100 feet deep. Sixteen rivers empty into it and forty percent of California's water drains through it. The San Francisco Bay is spanned by five bridges and contains four major islands; Alcatraz, Angel, Treasure, and Yerba Buena. Twelve different foghorn stations service the Bay and the 3.5 mile Trans-Bay Tube, running between San Francisco and Oakland, is one of the longest underwater rapid transit tubes in the world. Nine of California's 58 counties border the Bay including the state's smallest, San Francisco County.
