USS San Francisco Memorial, Fort Miley
On the northwestern point of San Francisco is the shrapnel-torn flag deck of the cruiser, USS San Francisco. The ship was one of the few survivors of Pearl Harbor and saw action throughout the Pacific during World War II. In November of 1942 it took part in the battle of Guadalcanal, where the USS San Francisco fought off a larger Japanese fleet and suffered 107 of her crew killed including Rear Admiral Daniel Callaghan, a native of San Francisco. This memorial was dedicated to the ship and her crew which earned seventeen battle stars and a Presidential unit citation during the war.
