Sutro Ruins, Ocean Beach
In 1896 millionaire Adolph Sutro built the world's largest public baths on the west edge of San Francisco. Modeled after Roman baths, the Sutro Baths were enclosed in a massive Crystal Palace-like glass and iron structure. The baths contained seven swimming pools and had 500 heated dressing rooms, 20,000 swimming suits and 40,000 towels for rent. The structure also housed three restaurants, a museum, and a Ferris wheel as well as tropical plants, fountains, and exotic stuffed animals. In 1966, while facing bankruptcy the baths mysteriously burned down and the owners collected a prodigious settlement.
