The Other Spreckels Mansion, Buena Vista Park
Not to be confused with the palatial Spreckels Mansion in Pacific Heights, this home was built by sugar magnate, Claus Spreckels for his nephew, Richard. The Queen Anne-Colonial Revival mansion, designed by Edward Vogel, was erected in 1897 and sits across from Buena Vista Park just above the Haight District. The beautiful mansion has had quite a history, residents have included Ambrose Bierce and Jack London, who wrote his novel White Fang while living here. Later the mansion was owned by Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young who built a music-recording studio inside which was used by many San Francisco musicians during the '60s and '70s. Most recently, in the 1990's San Francisco-born actor, Danny Glover purchased the mansion.
