The Fog Bell, Fisherman's Wharf
First developed in the 1800s, the fog bell was a precursor to the fog horn. This 1,600-pound bell was once mounted above a shed on Pier One, across from the Ferry Building. In times of heavy fog it was rung once every five minutes to warn ships the the dangerous shore (and you thought your job sucked). There were any number of fog bells around the mouth of the Golden Gate Bay and on Alcatraz Island. Today the retired Pier One bell hangs on this structure on another pier in Fisherman's Wharf.
