Daybreak, Glen Canyon Park
In 1868 the first commercial manufacturing of dynamite in the U.S. occurred in what is now Glen Canyon Park. Under exclusive license from Alfred Nobel the Giant Powder Company began production of the new explosive material. A year and a half later, on November 26, 1869, the factory suffered a massive explosion which completely destroyed every building in the facility. The company rebuilt and again it was destroyed by an accidental explosion. Eventually the Giant Powder Company moved to Point Pinole and in 1922 Glen Canyon's 122 were established as a city park. Today the large urban park is considered the finest example of a natural habitat inside San Francisco.
