University of San Francisco, Lone Mountain
Sitting high on Lone Mountain, the University of San Francisco sits like a palace overlooking the city. The site of the campus was once the axis point of the San Francisco's four largest cemeteries; Calvary, Masonic, Odd Fellows, and Laurel Hill. The graves were all relocated to the city of Colma over 100 years ago and the USF campus took its place on Lone Mountain.

As we are in the middle of March Madness I have to mention the 1950s USF Don's basketball teams that won two consecutive NCAA championships and hold the record longest winning streak of 60 games. Less famous is the undefeated 1951 USF football team that produced an astounding and record eight NFL players. Three of those players Ollie Matson, Gino Marchetti, and Bob St. Clair are now in the NFL Hall of Fame. A ninth player, Burt Toler shattered his knee and never played again but went on to become the NFL's first black official. One final note, the USF publicist that year was Pete Rozelle who would later serve as NFL Commissioner for 29 years.
