Dolby Headquarters, South of Market
Another unassuming San Francisco building with an interesting company inside. Ray Dolby was working at Ampex in Redwood City, south of San Francisco, when his engineering team developed the first practical video tape recorder in 1956. He left Ampex and founded Dolby Laboratories, specializing in audio noise reduction and audio encoding and compression. Dolby open his San Francisco offices in 1976 and today Dolby Laboratories is a $500 million business having won numerous engineering and technical achievement awards. The first film to feature Dolby sound was A Clockwork Orange and the first Dolby Digital Surround film was Batman Returns.
