Linden Labs & Second Life, Battery Street
This nondescript old brick warehouse at the bottom of Telegraph Hill actually holds an entire world with tens of millions of residents. This is the home of Linden Lab (founded on San Francisco's Linden Street), and home to the virtual world, Second Life. Second Life is a Metaverse, a 3D shared experience with residents from around the world. Launched in 2003, Second Life allows its residents to interact via avatars like the one pictured above (shown inside the Linden Lab offices). Second Life is used for a variety of purposes, both real and virtual, tens of thousands of businesses, politicians, and entertainers have offices in Second Life. In addition, dozens of colleges and universities offer training here. Recently both Sweden and the Maldives opened embassies in Second Life.
