Parking and Park(ing) in San Francisco
Not long ago we looked at the parking problems in downtown San Francisco. It seems everyone has a comment on the situation. The sculpture above, Spider Pelt adorns the side of the Moscone Garage. Created by artist Dustin Shuler in 1985 it's the flattened, splayed out skin of a 1971 Fiat Spider that certainly takes up less space than a normal car.

Another group considering the issue is the San Francisco art collective, Rebar. Starting in 2002, Rebar decided to rethink the concept of 'parking' by installing actual mini-parks in a city parking spaces. The mini-parks are assembled in the parking space and include grass, public seating and optionally a tree. They designated September 21st as Park(ing) Day and reclaimed 35,000 square feet of parking spaces in 47 cities around the world into mini-parks. On that day they even converted the San Francisco mayor's personal parking spot into a temporary public park.
