A Land of Milk and Honey in the West
California has always been seen as the land of opportunity and dreams, even from its first days. But it was not easy to realize those dreams, the long, difficult route to San Francisco from Eastern United States was by one of three routes; by boat around Cape Horn (the longest), through the isthmus of Panama (the most expensive), or across the continent by land (the most dangerous). Despite the hardships, many people looking for a new start found the Golden State calling to them, from the Gold Rushers in the 1840s and 50s to the Depression-era families, represented by the Joads, in the 1930s.

These new arrivals brought with them new hopes, new energies, and new ideas as they built their dreams. It's city of entrepreneurs, start-ups, and risk-takers. Today businesses with fewer than ten employees make up 85% of the San Francisco's total. The result has been a Bay Area that would have the 14th largest economy in the world if stood alone as its own country... and some of us kinda wish it would.
