Gold Star Mothers Rock, Heroes Grove
Hidden in an out-of-the-way redwood tree glen in Golden Gate Park, called Heroes Grove, sits the Gold Star Mothers Rock. Although unseen by nearly all park visitors today, the 15-acre grove was dedicated in 1919 before a crowd of 12,000 mourners, just months after the end of World War I. This 18-ton granite boulder was placed there in 1932 as a tribute to the San Franciscans who died in that war. The rock bears the inscribed names of the 748 men and 13 women from San Francisco who died. Those looking for Heroes Grove will find it across John F. Kennedy Drive directly north of the deYoung Museum.
