Union Square, Downtown
To many Union Square is the heart of San Francisco. Designed by Jasper O'Farrell in 1847, two years before the Gold Rush, the Square got its name from the fiery pro-Union speeches delivered here during the Civil War. The Square didn't truly become the center of the city's shopping district until after the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906. In 1942, the first garage placed under a park was constructed below the plaza. Today, the square is surrounded by the city's most exclusive hotels, restaurants and shopping. Union Square remains the heart of San Francisco, serving as the site of many public concerts, impromptu protests, speeches by visiting dignitaries, and the annual Christmas tree and Menorah.
