WildCare, San Rafael
Before the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, Marin County was a wooded land filled with all types of wildlife located just two miles from San Francisco. Today with strict limits on development, no heavy industry and the majority of the county protected open space, the wildlife still abounds. There isn't a homeowner in the county who hasn't woken up to deer in his yard or braked while a giant wild turkey trotted across the road. There are even a number of wild peacocks that wander around on their own.

One unique organization that aids the wildlife in the county is WildCare, a large volunteer group that treats more than 4,000 wild animals from as many as 200 different species each year with a 24-hour Wildlife hotline. Additionally, WildCare also teaches more than 40,000 Bay Area children and adults through camps, field trips, nature van visits and more. WildCare's animal shelter in San Rafael is open to the public.
