Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon, Oakland
Located on the docks since 1880, Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon was built from the timbers of the old whaling ship, 'Umatilla'. During the 1920s it was truly the first and last chance for servicemen to get a drink when arriving, or before shipping overseas. The tiny saloon is also referred to as Jack London's Rendezvous because it was here that the author studied as a boy and here that he would later work on his novels Call of the Wild and The Sea Wolf. London even immortalized this saloon in his book, John Barleycorn. Other notables to have enjoyed refreshment here include President William Howard Taft, Robert Louis Stevenson, Joaquin Miller, and Ambrose Bierce. Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon, both a Nation Historic and Literary landmark, remains much as it ever was on Jack London Square near downtown Oakland.
