Chinatown Hospital, Jackson Street
The birthplace of martial artist Bruce Lee, San Francisco Chinese Hospital dates back to 1925. Built to replace the Tung Wah Dispensary which was destroyed by the Great Earthquake, it was the first and only Chinese hospital in America. Fifteen Chinese organizations banded together and raised funds for the original building and its staffing. Today the community owned, not-for-profit organization hospital remains the main medical point of access for poor, elderly, or monolingual Asians in San Francisco. The Hospital, updated in 1980, now maintains a capacity of 54 beds and is located in the heart of Chinatown.
