Dusk at Yerba Buena Gardens
Designed by architect Romaldo Giurgola in 1992, Yerba Buena Gardens serves a number of purposes. Besides a acting as the epicenter for many of San Francisco's museums (pictured in the background is the SFMOMA and the Center for the Arts Theater) the 5.5-acre Gardens are also an urban open space near downtown where musical events, performances, and poetry readings take place. Designed as a big oval bowl with sculpted hills, cafes, waterfalls, it also covers Moscone North, the city's large convention center. How did the architect reduce the weight of soil and plantings built over the Moscone Center? Huge Strofoam blocks are placed under the terraced lawns.
