Waiting For Frances, San Francisco Bay
Since the 1880s there have been many sightings of a large sea creature in San Francisco Bay. In 1896 the Seringapatam, a steamboat filled with teakwood was overturned and swamped by what newspaper accounts described as a "Neptunian Titan." In 1924 a U.S. Corp of Engineers dredging operation reported a creature of over 50 feet in length circling their vessel numerous times before diving into the depths. And in 1963 the creature was again spotted, this time by an entire ferry full of commuters. Over the years dozens of sightings have added the legend of 'Frances' the San Francisco Bay Monster. Almost everyday you can see photographers set up around the Bay hoping to catch a shot of the creature. But so far the only clear photographic evidence of Frances comes from a few grainy pictures taken by a tourist in 1974.
