Molinari's Deli, North Beach
The 111-year old Molinari's Delicatessen is an authentic type of place that transports you back to the old world food stores of Naples or Parma. Opened by sausage maker P.J. Molinari in 1896, the deli has been carrying on their tradition of world famous salami, coppa, pepperoni, sopressata, and salametti secchi for four generations in this San Francisco location (note the worn linoleum in front of the counter from decades of customers waiting to be served). Besides the dry cured meats, the deli is filled with cheeses, peppers, bottles of wine, jars of olive oil, artichokes, tomato sauces, and fresh uncut pasta. Lunch time customers select their own roll from a large bread bin and then order one of Molinari's sandwiches to go. My favorite, the Renzo's Special, features prosciutto, mozzarella, marinated sun-dried tomatoes, and balsamic vinegar. Next time you're at your local Italian market check the salami for sale in the white casings, chances are they're from Molinari's.
