Protest with a Twist, San Rafael
In this current political climate it's not unusual to see Americans protesting immigration issues. However this protest in San Rafael was quite a bit different. Hundreds of local U.S. citizens showed up to protest AGAINST the Immigration and Custom Enforcement's midnight raids on the homes of undocumented workers which resulted in 30 arrests. The raids sent shockwaves through the immigration community, sending most of them underground. This resulted in a county-wide protest, as witnessed above, almost exclusively made up of white American residents. Outraged grandmothers, teenagers, and clergy among others, lined the streets of the city to protest the I.C.E. midnight raids into family homes. Additional outrage at the federal policy and in support of the undocumented workers was later echoed by the Marin Board of Supervisors and the San Rafael's Mayor. A different kind of immigration protest indeed.
