Tribune Tower, Downtown Oakland
The most recognizable symbol of Oakland is the 310-foot, Tribune Tower. A replica of the bell tower at the Basilica of St. Marks in Venice, the tower was built in 1923 by owner of the Oakland Tribune, U.S. Congressman Joseph Knowland. Knowland officed in the tower and was known as the 'Power in the Tower.' The politically influential Knowland mentored his son, future Senate Majority Leader William F. Knowland, Earl Warren, and many other Republicans. Today the tower still houses the offices of the newspaper. In 1970 a horn-based soul band from Oakland named 'Tower of Power' released their first album, East Bay Grease.
