Old and New, Mission Dolores
Preserved since its construction, the old Mission Dolores (top) features a gilded Baroque altarpiece imported from Mexico in 1780. The tribal pattern on the ceiling was originally painted by the native Ohlone over two hundred years ago using vegetable dyes. Next door, the more modern Basilica of San Francisco (bottom) built in 1918 is where most of the Mission's services take place today. The Mission is generally thought of as the birthplace of San Francisco, the first site being dedicated by Father Francisco Palou with a mass on June 29, 1776.
