Great Meadow, Fort Mason
The scenic parks and views around San Francisco might not exist today except for the tireless work by men and women like Phillip Burton. Burton was elected to Congress in 1972 and is best remembered as an advocate for the rights of workers, seniors, and people with disabilities. He also strongly believed that national parks close to where people lived would improve their lives. From 1978 through 1980 he authored the most expansive park legislation in history including a bill that created the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Burton's vision still influences how the country views, values, and preserves our natural and cultural heritage today. In the middle of the Great Meadow of Fort Mason his 15-foot statue beseeches visitors to stop and consider the beauty around them.
