Federal Reserve Bank, Market and Main
The Federal Reserve System regulates the banking industry and controls the nation's money supply and the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco is the largest in the country, covering 36% of the United States. The bank also has one of the largest collections of paper money in the United States. Its American Currency Exhibit is open to public viewing and features a vast collection of historic notes (no cameras allowed). This exhibit includes 1776 Colonial currency engraved by Paul Revere and printed by Benjamin Franklin, silver certificates, Confederate currency, greenbacks, currency drawn on state, city and even Mormon Church banks. One surprising fact: at the end of the Civil War, nearly one-half of all U.S. paper currency in circulation was counterfeit. This photo shows the bank's third location which it moved to in 1983.
