Mini Series Day 3 of 5, Mikoshi Purification
A Mikoshi (at top) is a Shinto shrine carried on long poles by dozens of bearers to deliver divine Kami, or spirits, to important ceremonies and events. Here, local priests offer prayers for the purification of the Mikoshi. In the crowd watching the ceremony are two master musicians. In black, Kitaro, multiple Grammy-winning artist and in white, Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka of the SF Taiko Dojo, named National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts.
