286 - Columbarium, Richmond District
The Columbarium is the largest facility for cremated ashes on the West Coast. Over 10,000 urns reside in the 75 foot high, four-story mausoleum. It is what remains of the Oddfellows' cemetery from 1898. When all San Francisco cemeteries were relocated in 1906, the Columbarium stayed behind. The structure holds the urns of the famous, such as the Wells Fargo and Folgers Coffee families, as well as unique locals like the Tomato King and Queen, Bobo the Jamaican bear, and Dante the Magician. The Columbarium was also the first to accept AIDS victims in the early 1980s. The Neptune Society, which now owns the Columbarium, also offers services that can scatter your ashes across the Bay Area from a plane or aboard their 60-foot yacht, The Naiad.
