Year of the Dog, Chinatown
Gung Hay Fat Choy! Thousands turned out downtown on Saturday night to watch the Chinese New Year parade. The San Francisco parade was the first, and is the largest, of its kind anywhere in the world. Started in the 1860s, the celebration mixed the traditions of China; banners, lion dancers, dragons, and fireworks with the tradition of American parades. The Year of the Dog, celebrated every 12 years according to the lunar calendar, is the sign of those born in 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, and 1994. If you are a Dog you are honest and loyal, but you are also stubborn and eccentric - hey, just like my dog.
