Ferry Terminal, Embarcadero
Before the Golden Gate Bridge was built, the Ferry Building was the symbol of San Francisco. Completed in 1898, it was modeled after the Moorish Giralda Tower of Seville in Spain. The building is 660 feet long and the tower stands 235 feet tall. The clock inside the tower stopped exactly at the moment of both the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes. Oddly, the 1989 earthquake caused the rebirth of the Ferry Building by forcing the demolition of the two-story highway that had obscured it. This ushered in the Ferry Building's transformation into a gourmet food emporium and a renewed symbol of the city.
