Vesuvio Cafe, North Beach
Located next door to the City Lights Bookstore, Vesuvio Cafe is a landmark saloon in the literary history of the San Francisco. It was the favorite drinking spot of the Beats during the 50s and 60s. Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, and Alan Ginsberg all drank here. Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay of 'The Godfather" here too. The interior is a collection of memorabilia, junk, and art. The kind of look that TGI Friday's and a thousand other poser bars has failed to recreate. Along with the history and ambiance, the drinks are reasonably priced and it's open from 6 am to 2 am - every day of the year.
