Dragon Gate, Grant Street
Marking the southern entrance to Chinatown, the Dragon Gate is designed in the tradition of ceremonial gates into old Chinese villages. The carved dolphins at the top represent prosperity while large stone foo dogs flanking the gate protect against evil spirits. The colors are also considered good luck, red is associated with happiness, gold with wealth, and green with fertility and abundance. The dragon street lamps date back to 1925. The inscription on the dragon-studded gate is a quote from Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, "All under heaven is for the good of people."
