Grace Cathedral, Nob Hill
Across the street from the Fountain of Tortoises in Huntington Park stands Grace Episcopal Cathedral. The Cathedral took 54 years to construct and was modeled after Norte Dame in Paris. But like San Francisco, it is an assemblage of various parts; the rose window was made in Chartres, the bronze doors are from Florence, and the north tower altarpiece is by Keith Haring. The stained glass windows installed in 1966 also break with tradition, depicting Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, John Glenn, Thurgood Marshall, FDR, and Frank Lloyd Wright among others. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Archibishop Desmond Tutu are among those who have preached here.
