Police Recruitment, Castro District
San Francisco Police Department officers recruiting in the center of the gay Castro District. Founded in 1849, the first SFPD had no uniforms, equipment, or even a police station. Its prisoners were held at a makeshift jail aboard the abandoned ship, Euphemia. Today, with over 2000 officers, the San Francisco Police Department is one the most socially and technologically progressive forces in the country, actively recruiting people of color, women, and gays to reflect the diversity of the city. Chief of Police, Heather Fong together with Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White make San Francisco the first major city in America with women in both these top positions.
