Plaza Vina Del Mar, Sausalito
Sausalito is the town on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. It started as a Mexican land grant then evolved into an unremarkable embarkation point for ferries commuting into the city. The construction of the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937 nearly turned the city into a forgotten and bypassed backwater but World War II saved the city with the creation of Marinship, a shipyard employing 70,000 workers round-the-clock building tankers and merchant ships. Today Sausalito owns an international reputation for its unique charm, beauty, and character.
