In 1873 after a long-running series of public insults Charles deYoung, co-founder of the San Francisco Chronicle, fired two shots into mayoral candidate, Reverend Isaac Kalloch, ten days before the election. Kalloch survived and was elected San Francisco's 18th mayor. When deYoung was released on bail he immediately began preparing a scathing editorial article on Kalloch, alleging adultery and other scandals. Kalloch's son, Milton got wind of the upcoming article, walked into the lobby of The Chronicle, shot and killed Charles de Young. Surprisingly, this was not the first murder involving a city's newspaper editor. 18 years earlier James Casey editor of the Sunday Times shot and killed James King editor of the Evening Bulletin for making Casey's earlier criminal record public. Vigilantes hanged Casey on the day of King's funeral.
