Bay Bridge View, Telegraph Hill
One of the more incredible but fully-documented stories of San Francisco took place on Telegraph Hill in 1955. It was here that the CIA carried on 'Operation Midnight Climax' a program to test the effects LSD on unsuspecting civilians. A brothel was set up by the agency and LSD was spiked into the customers' drinks. The object was to see if the drug could be used as a truth serum or for mind control. According to CIA operative, George H. White the duplex at 225 Chestnut St. was always referred to as "the pad" and was designed after images from a new magazine called 'Playboy'.
