Boat Rental, Stow Lake
In the 1870s western San Francisco was a dune-filled expanse inhabited by squatters and outlaws. When a giant thousand acre park was proposed many scoffed at the idea that the sandy soil could support anything, let along a park. Golden Gate Park stands now as a testament to the will of San Francisco to preserve a place to play and relax in the middle of a major city. The "Great Sand Park" as it was called before its construction now features a large and lush botanical garden, nine lakes, a series of fly casting pools, and a lily pond.
