Oysters, Embarcadero
Oysters have always been a bay area favorite. Seventeenth century explorers found shell piles as large as three-story buildings that were left by the native Miwok and Ohlone tribes. Later oysters became the favorite splurge of gold miners who struck it rich, with a plate of oysters selling for as much as $20 during the Gold Rush, a incredible price at that time. Even Jack London described pirates sneaking into oyster beds at night and stealing them by the boatload. While crabs may be generally thought of as San Francisco's signature shellfish, be sure to try the oysters and a bit of local history.
