Working Tug, Port of Oakland
Oakland was the first major port on the west coast of America and in the 1960s was second only to New York. The Port of Oakland sprawls over 1200 acres and in 2004 serviced more than 1200 vessels. Those vessels accounted for more than two million containers passing through the port. In March two new 24-story container cranes arrived from China. The cranes were so tall that the ship carrying them took on ballast to allow the cranes to pass below the Golden Gate Bridge, with less than six feet of clearance.
